Abstract

Objective: To document, grade and compare post operative inflammation and cellular reaction following cataract surgery with and without heparinised irrigating solution.

Methods: In a prospective observational study involving 120 subjects, 60 received heparinised irrigating solution and 60 subjects received non heparinised irrigating solution during cataract surgery. Post operative anterior chamber cells, flare and iris pigment dispersion was evaluated at intervals of post-op day1, day15, day28 and at end of 8 weeks.

Results: In early post operative period (day1 and day15) post operative inflammation was significantly less(p=0.0001) in patients in whom heparinised irrigating fluid had been used intra operatively. Further Diabetics group had higher rates of postoperative inflammation than non DM.

Conclusion: Inclusion of heparin in irrigating fluid is a simple, effective method to reduce post operative inflammation and hence reduce chances of complications and have better visual outcome.
