Abstract
AIM:To compare the clinical outcomes of modified (MCC) versus conventional crater chop(CC) techniques in phacoemulsification for hard nuclear cataracts.METHODS:100 eyes with uncomplicated cataract (nucleus grade 3 and 4) were equally divided randomly in Group A (MCC) and Group B (CC). Intra-operative Effective PhacoTime(EPT), BSS volume used was noted. Post-operative central corneal thickness (CCT), Endothelial Cell Density(ECD), BCVA were recorded at days 1, 7, 90 post-op. Chi-square test (categorical data); Mann-Whitney U test & t-tests for other parameters, were done.RESULTS: Mean EPT in group A and B were 6.16s and 14.25s respectively (p <0.001). BSS volume used was 105.9ml and 221.7ml respectively (p<0.001). At 3 months, ECD loss was 4.35% and 8.6% respectively (p=0.025). First day CCT was significantly increased in Gp B but same in both groups at 3 months. Significant improvement in BCVA was noted in both groups. This new technique significantly reduces EPT, BSS used & ECD loss.
