Abstract
Cataract extraction under local anaesthesia can be stressful because patients are aware of their surroundings. Music has proven to have a comforting effect on people by distracting them from fear, pain, and anxiety
Purpose We lnvestigated music as a method of stabilizing patient’s vitals during cataract surgery under local anesthesia (LA)
Methods 50 patients having cataract and no significant systemic co-morbidity underwent cataract extraction under LA by a single surgeon in a similar surgical setting.
Only 25 of these were exposed to ‘soothing sitar music’ during surgery. Blood pressure and heart rates of all the patients were measured 30 minutes before and during surgery and compared
Results Participants in the group who were exposed to music during surgery showed lower blood pressure and heart rates compared to the other group
Conclusion Music significantly stabilizes the vitals of the patients during cataract surgery and can improve their post-operative recovery
