Abstract

47 years old HIV positive female patient with progressive persistent cytomegalovirus(CMV) retinitis was treated with a combination of high dose intravitreal ganciclovir ( 4.0 mg/0.1cc ) & systemic antiviral ( Tab.Valganciclovir 900 mg/day orally) therapy. * High dose intavitreal ganciclovir ( 4.0 mg/0.1cc ) was given at the interval of 7 days for three times. Along with that Tab. Valganciclovir 450 mg BD given daily. *Oral Tab.Valganciclovir was continued as maintanance dose of 450 mg/day for 3 months untill there was significant rise in patient’s CD4 count i.e >100 cells/microL. * Pre-therapy visual acuity was in Right eye; FC close to face & in Left eye; PL , PR 4+. Pre-therapy & post-therapy fundus photographs were taken.

Patient demonstrated significant improvement in visual acuity. In right eye visual acuity improved upto 3/60 while in left eye improved upto 1 FFC. There was almost complete resolution of the active CMV retinitis in both eyes.
