Abstract
The course is a guide of current concepts in big data and Artificial Intelligence(AI) for the ophthalmologist. It deals with role of AI in image recognition using fundus photographs, optical coherence tomography and visual fields in diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, glaucoma, macular oedema and age-related macular degeneration. It briefly outlines the tips and tools used in healthcare AI, clinical and technical challenges, bioethics in computing, explainability of the algorithm, medicolegal issues, regulatory issues, pitfalls in the acceptance and adoption AI ‘black-box’ algorithms, possible actionable inputs in Teleophthalmology and the importance of the ophthalmologist in the development of the algorithms. It also discusses the changes in scientific reporting and research publishing induced by the use of increasingly large amounts of data, the importance of data management and the future implications of these technologies in ophthalmology.
