Abstract
Purpose:To evaluate the effect of uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery on macula by optical coherence tomography.
Methods:20 cataractous eyes of patients without any systemic and ocular pathology underwent full ophthalmologic and OCT examinations preoperatively and at the postoperative 1st day, 1st and 3rd months.
Results:The mean central foveal and perifoveal macular thicknesses were significantly increased at postoperative 1st and 3rd month.
Conclusion:A seemingly uncomplicated Phacoemulsification surgery may lead to a statistically significant increase in the macular thickness. Thus, longer follow up and detailed fundus examination of patients using OCT is advised for detecting macular changes post-phacoemulsification surgery
