Abstract
Objectives- To Study the correlates of age related macular degeneration (ARMD) in patients attending tertiary hospital . Materials and methods- In case control study total of 120 subjects underwent ophthalmic examination , fundus photographs taken based on fundoscopy (size of drusen≥63 micron) and risk factors such as age , gender , blood pressure ,smoking , alcohol , sedentary lifestyle ,sunlight exposure , Body mass index (BMI) and lipid profile was studied. Result: Mean age of ARMD was 67.13±7.40 and 64.63±6.89 for controls . Higher blood pressure in 2.61 ± 0.55 were observed in comparison to controls which is significant (p=0.0001). Higher number of smokers and alcohol drinkers and BMI suffered from ARMD in comparison to controls (p=0.001). Conclusion: Increasing age , smoking and alcohol showed strong association with ARMD. Hypertension and BMI showed moderate association with late ARMD. ARMD causes severe visual impairment among elderly and treatment is still ineffective
