Abstract

A case of severe bilateral loss of vision in a 6 year old male child presenting solely as bilateral optic neuritis with no systemic manifestation following Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Infection. Ophthalmic examination showed sluggishly reacting pupils, swollen optic discs with small peripapillary hemorrhages in both eyes. Serology revealed EBV infection. visual acuity gradually improved after high dose of corticosteroids . EBV infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis of bilateral optic neuritis in a child with severe bilateral visual loss following a febrile illness.

Key Messages : This case is unique as patient presented solely with bilateral optic-neuritis with no other systemic manifestation EBV must be considered in differential diagnosis of bilateral optic neuritis in a child with bilateral vision loss following febrile illness.
