Abstract
Methods: A prospective interventional study. Patients were randomized into two groups, Group A underwent unilateral two muscle surgery, Group B underwent bilateral three muscle surgery. Success was defined as residual deviation of ≤10PD. Minimum follow up was three months.
Results: A total of 35 patients were included. Mean age was comparable in both the groups. Mean pre and postoperative deviations in the two groups were: Group A(n=17): 53.5 ± 5.8PD and 9.3 ± 3.1PD (P =0.3); Group B(n=18):53.9 ± 5.8PD and 8.4 ± 3.5PD (P=0.3). Surgical success was seen in 82% and 78% in Group A and B respectively (P =1). Post-operative lateral incomitance was 18% and 11 % in Group A and B respectively (P =0.658).
Conclusion: Unilateral two muscle surgery can successfully correct large angle exotropia without causing significant motility limitation or lateral incomitance.
