Abstract
AIM-To detect and compare ocular surface changes in type-2 diabetic patients with no diabetic retinopathy v/s proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) using conventional ophthalmic tests.
METHODS -observational, cross sectional study on 100 patients between 31 – 60 years with type-2 DM. They were divided into non retinopathy and proliferative diabetic retinopathy group. All the patients were subjected to the conventional clinical tests of corneal sensitivity, Schirmer’s 1 test, slit lamp evaluation, corneal fluroscein and Rose Bengal staining, TBUT.DEWS grading and OSD index were followed
RESULTS-The PDR group showed significantly reduced corneal sensitivity (72%), Schirmer’s<5mm (58%),TBUT <5s (67%), corneal fluorescein staining revealed progressively injured epithelium(56%) in comparison to non retinopathy controls(P<0.001), CONCLUSION-Ocular surface of PDR patients should be examined regularly during evaluation of posterior segment, to prevent and treat long term morbidity.
