Abstract
Pituitary apoplexy is a clinical syndrome related to pituitary haemorrhage, necrosis, or both. We report one patient who had uneventful cataract surgery under sub-tenon anesthesia developed acute visual loss on first postoperative day. Aim: to find out the causes for sudden visual loss. Methods: ophthalmological & neurological examination was done. Surgical & anaesthesia related complication was ruled out. Results: Evaluation of operated eye showed normal anterior segment with mild RAPD & posterior segment was normal. MRI Brain showed Pituitary macroadenoma with haemorrhagic apoplexy and optic chiasmic compression. Precipitating factors may be related to surgical stress and associated systemic illness like diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia. Conclusion: Cataract surgery has its complications. There is literature of pituitary apoplexy following cardiac surgery. So far there is no case report of pituitary apoplexy following cataract surgery.
