Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To study the association of hemifacial spasm (HFS) and benign essential blepharospasm (BEB) with distal and proximal vascular compression of facial nerve.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We retrospectively analysed 15 adult patients with HFS and BEB from 2017 to 2019 who underwent MRI brain with gadolinium contrast.
RESULTS: We found that 7 of 13 HFS patients had grade 1 chavda AICA loop, 1 of 13 HFS had both grade 1 chavda AICA loop as well as tortuous vertebral artery, 1 of 13 HFS had grade 2 chavda AICA loop, 1 of 13 HFS had venous loop, 3 of 13 had tortuous vertebrobasilar artery causing facial nerve compression. 2 of 2 BEB had grade 1 chavda AICA loop causing facial nerve compression.
CONCLUSION: Neurovascular Compression of the facial nerve by venous or arterial loop at root exit zone or distal facial nerve route can present with HFS.
