Abstract
Purpose: Subjective and objective assessment of tear volume and ocular surface changes before and after upper eyelid blepharoplasty for dermatochalasis and lash ptosis.
Methods: 40 patients(80 eyelids) were assessed for dermatochalasis, lash ptosis and various dry eye paramaters like tear osmolarity(TO), tear film breakup time(TBUT), conjunctival impression cytology(CIC), Schirmer’s test with anasthesia(STA) objectively and subjectively by OSDI questionnaire before and after surgery.
Results: TO(mean=3.17mOsm/L;SD = ± 2.26mOsm/L), TBUT(mean=-0.42sec;SD=±0.63sec), OSDI subjective symptoms(mean=16.86; D = ± 12.55), CIC(39.3% improvement), STA(mean = -0.45mm; SD = ± 0.75mm) showed significant improvement (p <0.001). Pearson’s correlation showed significant positive correlation of TO with conjunctival, corneal staining and OSDI subjective symptoms and negative with TBUT and STA. Conclusion: Significant improvement was seen in subjective symptoms and tear osmolarity patients.
