Abstract
Methods: Case 1 an army driver in glacial regions, Case 2 a welder by profession, Case 3 with history of unshielded solar eclipse viewing – with photic retinopathy, underwent detailed ocular exam and OCT.
Results: Case 1 showed foveal thinning, loss of ellipsoid zone, external limiting membrane and cone outer segment tips with hyperreflectivity along RPE. Case 2 showed hyper-reflective track from outer layers to inner layers at fovea in both eyes and outer layers-retinal pigment epithelial alterations in right eye. Case 3 showed foveal disruption of ellipsoid zone and formation of foveal degenerative space in outer nuclear layer.
Conclusion: Use of standard eye wear is highly recommended while working in high-altitude snow-covered areas, working with welding arc and while seeing astronomical events. Any of these can lead to photic retinopathy.
