Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus is an idiopathic multisystem autoimmune disease with varied clinical features, characterized by deposition of immune complexes against body’s own antibodies. Its etiology is multifactorial including a play of various factors like genetic, environmental and immune components though no proved relationship exists amongst them. Ocular involvement can be diagnosed in approximately one-third of the patients and is usually indicative of disease activity. Ocular involvement can be either of anterior or posterior segment with posterior scleritis being an uncommon finding in a patient presenting with SLE. Early diagnosis and the adoption of suitable therapeutic measures are necessary to prevent sight-threatening consequences. We report a case of posterior scleritis associated with SLE, wherein the symptoms corresponding to SLE started almost at the same time as that of posterior scleritis.
