Abstract

Neonatal endophthalmitis is a potentially blinding complication of neonatal sepsis. A 4-day old neonate was referred to the neonatal intensive care unit of our institute with septicemia. Ocular examination revealed mild lid edema in the left eye. Handheld slit-lamp examination revealed mild corneal edema, exudates in the anterior chamber, fixed non-dilating pupil with an absent glow. USG revealed diffuse hyperechoic dots in the posterior segment. Pseudomonas neonatal sepsis was diagnosed after a positive blood culture. Half adult dose intravitreal ceftazidime and vancomycin were planned on day 5 of life but unfortunately, the child collapsed on day 6. This poster shows the presentation of neonatal endogenous endophthalmitis which is a remerging threat as the survival of neonates has improved. This also emphasizes the role of routine ocular examinations in all newborns to detect and treat this blinding complication promptly.
