Abstract
Aim:To determine the toxic effects of spray sanitizers on eyes. Methods:This observational study was performed in April,2020 in the emergency department of a government medical college & hospital.63 subjects were recruited who were either engaged in spraying of sanitizers or somehow exposed to them. All underwent slit-lamp examination. Results:Majority of patients (n=32,52.38%) belonged to the age group of 24 to 40 years.38 (60.32%) patients had mild symptoms of burning sensation, itching & lacrimation.12 (19.05%) patients had corneal erosions with photophobia & ciliary congestion.Discussion:Spray sanitizers contain sodium hypochlorite which is a broad spectrum disinfectant. It causes ocular toxicity which can be bothersome. The ocular toxicity can be prevented by taking appropriate measures like use of face shields, protective glasses & frequent copious irrigation of eyes with water. Conclusion:Spray sanitizers should be used cautiously after taking appropriate & necessary precautions.
