Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a new automated tools for diagnosing and treating ocular diseases.
The most immediate promising computer algorithms are in field of retinal diseases. Researchers from Google Brain invented in 2016 “deep learning” AI system that taught itself to accurately detect diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema in fundus photographs.
AI is also applied in age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and reticular pseudodrusen.
Researchers develop AI-based systems to detect or evaluate other conditions like
pediatric cataract, glaucoma, keratoconus,¬ corneal ectasia, and oculoplastic reconstruction.
Artificial intelligence based IOL power calculation is proving ‘grandmaster in ophthalmology’.
Though limitations are there, AI helps for better diagnosis and management for comprehensive ophthalmologists.
