Abstract
Globally open globe injuries are important causes of unilateral visual loss. Present retrospective study conducted to evaluate the visual outcome in 32 cases of open globe injuries in a secondary eye care center and time of action following injuries for influencing the visual outcome. Mutilated eyes without visual potential were excluded from the study. 14 cases recovered to VA >6/18 and 8 out of them managed in emergency hours. Time of action was grouped into (i) < 6 hrs, (ii) 6 to 24 hrs and (iii) beyond 24 hrs. 79% (6 out of 8) in group (i), 42% (5 out of 12) in group (ii) and 8%(1 out of 12) in group (iii) recovered to > 6/18 in 3 months. 21% in group (i) 58% in group (ii) and 92% in group (iii) had severe visual loss as the outcome. Visual outcome in sight threatening open globe injuries depends on the time of action as delay in management leads to profound visual loss or blindness. So necessary emergency eye care facilities are to be created to provide timely service.
