Abstract
An 8 year old girl presented with blurring of vision and white dots in both eyes (BE) since 4 years. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 6/18 in BE. Anterior segment showed central corneal subepithelial and anterior stromal granular deposits. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography confirmed presence of deposits of varying morphology with majority lying above Bowman’s membrane. A diagnosis of BE Granular Corneal Dystrophy was made. Both eyes underwent sequential alcohol epitheliectomy wherein the corneal epithelium was debrided using 20% ethyl alcohol and all superficial deposits were removed. Improvement was noted at 1 month with near complete resolution and BCVA of 6/12 in right eye and 6/9 in left eye which was sustained at 3 and 4 months. Recurrence was seen at 4 months but owing to good vision she was observed and kept on close follow up. Alcohol epitheliectomy is a cost effective option compared to phototherapeutic keratectomy in suitable cases of corneal dystrophy.
