Abstract
Penetrating orbital injuries with vegetative materials are not uncommon in the developing world. This is more common in the younger age group after road traffic accidents (RTA), falls, and trauma. Wooden foreign bodies (FB) present a unique scenario as they may go undetected on routinely advised CT scans.
A 25 year old male presented with a history of primary repair done elsewhere in the left eye following RTA 5 days ago. Initial CT scan revealed medial wall fracture of the left orbit with haemosinus of the left sphenoidal sinus. On examination a wooden foreign body was suspected and confirmed by MRI. Urgent exploration was done under general anaesthesia and the FB was removed. Post-operatively ocular movements were full and there was good recovery. Possibility of wooden foreign body in cases of RTA should be kept in mind as these can be missed on initial radiological tests and can lead to severe complications. Proper history taking and local wound exploration is paramount.
