Abstract
AIM:To assess the Retinal Nerve Fibre Layer (RNFL) thickness in highly myopic patients and their comparison with normal subjects by Spectral Domain OCT.
METHODS: Group1 includes 50 Highly myopic patients and Group2 includes 50 Subjects of refractive status is less than -0.5D of same age group 20-55 years.Evaluation included visual acuity, refraction,Axial Length(AL)by A-scan and RNFL thickness by SD-OCT.
RESULTS: Mean age(in years) of Group1 is 26.6±7.2 and of Group2 is 31.4±5.5. Mean spherical equivalent (SE)is-8.56±2.3D and AL is 27.34±7.89mm of Group1. Average RNFL thickness in Group1 is 92.8 ±10.6µm and in Group2 is 108.4±11.2µm(p<0.001) .On quadrantwise RNFL is more in superior, nasal and inferior quadrant Group2 (p<0.001) and in temporal quadrant results are comparable.RNFL thickness in Group1 decreases as AL and SE increases. CONCLUSION:RNFL thickness decreases with increase in SE in high myopes ,which is important while examininig a highly myopic patients for glaucoma.
