Abstract
Aim: To describe the management and outcomes of unusual and challenging intraocular and intraorbital foreign bodies (FB)
Method: Case series of 4intraocular and intraorbital foreign bodies
Results: Mean(+SD) age was 35(+20.19)yrs, range was 12-61yrs; all 4were males. Workplace injuries in (2), domestic injury (1) and assault(1). Two were intraocular with corneoscleral tears and 2 were intraorbital extending intracranially. Nature of FB included intraorbital 7cm long wooden stick(1) and dagger(1); intraocular were fish hook(1) and 5cm long metal(1). Sizes of the FB ranged from 2.5-12.5cm. Intraorbital FBs were removed along with neurosurgery department, 1 patient required evisceration. Final visual acuity was 6/12 in 1, 6/60 in 1, no PL in 1, not assessed in 1. Two cases had a fairly good visual outcome despite ominous location and size of the FB
Conclusion: Outcomes are unpredictable in intraocular and intraorbital FBs, Outcomes can be improved with meticulous planning and teamwork
