Abstract
Introduction: Although rare, but Bear maul injuries are the most common wildlife injuries.Due to increased deforestation they come in human habitat in search of food.
Methods and results:Retrospectively we reviewed 9 Bear mauling victims treated in our department from May 2018 to December 2019.Most victims suffered multiple injuries more commonly involving the face (80%), Ocular Region (80%) and limb and thorax region (40%).
Conclusion: With increased encroachment of humans in forest areas, bear mauling may not be that much uncommon.Though rare, wild animal injuries are dangerous and hold risk of transmission of rabies virus infection, Post exposure prophylaxis of every patient should be done.Management of these injuries includes simple suturing of lacerations to reconstructive surgeries for more complex compound injuries with three dimensional defects.Tug of war situation between human and animal environment should be resolved with awareness, education, knowledge, and prevention.
