Abstract
Aim: To study safety and efficacy of preop use of topical dexamethasone in patients with senile cataract undergoing cataract surgery.
Material and methods: 100 pt with senile cataract planned for surgery were randomized into two groups. Group A (52 eyes) received dexamethasone 0.1% & moxifloxacin 0.5% eye drops and Group B (48 eyes) received only moxifloxacin 0.5% eye drops four times daily for 2 days before surgery. Postop AC cells & flare were evaluated at day 1, week 1 , 2 and 4 after surgery.
Results: Baseline parameters (age, sex, IOP, grade of cataract) were similar in both groups. There was statistically significant difference in mean AC cells (1.32± 0.6 in Group A & 2.41±1.21 in Group B) at day 1 and (0.9± 0.3 in Group A & 1.38±0.7 in Group B) at 1 week. Postoperatively, elevated IOP was seen in 4 eyes in group A and 3 eyes in group B.
Conclusion: Preoperative dexamethasone 0.1% can be safely used in senile cataract to reduce postop inflammation and early visual recovery.
