Abstract
Purpose: To study the intermediate outcomes of Ahmed Glaucoma Valve(AGV) performed by a beginner glaucoma surgeon.
Methods: Duration: Jan-2017 and March-2019. Baseline demographics; best-corrected vision, intraocular pressure(IOP) and number of anti-glaucoma medication(AGM) at baseline, postop day 1, week-1, month-1, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 were noted. Primary outcome was IOP. Secondary outcomes were AGM and complications. Failure was defined as IOP >20 mm Hg on maximum AGM/resurgery/loss of light perception.
Results: 59 eyes with mean age of 36.9±24 years were included. Median followup was 8(3,12)months. Mean IOP dropped from 33(7)mmHg on 4(0.9) AGM to 15(4.8)mmHg on 2(1) AGM at 6 months after surgery. Cumulative success was 92.3%(95% CI: 80.6-97.1) at 6 months and 83.3%(63.5-92.9) at 1 year. Six eyes had complications and needed minor surgery; of which 50% had tube corneal touch. 13% had failure.
Conclusion: AGV surgery can be performed with comparable success rate by beginners.
