Abstract
AIM: To compare contrast sensitivity recovery in patients with neuropapillitis and retrobulbar (ON)
METHOD: On patients attending ophthalmology OPD, a comprehensive and standardized ophthalmic examination was conducted.32 eyes clinically diagnosed as acute ON underwent Contrast enhanced Magnetic resonance imaging (CEMRI 1.5 Tesla) at presentation, were then treated with intravenous and oral steroid and followed up. CS using Pelli Robson chart was recorded in log value.
RESULTS: 30 eyes of 28 patients with acute optic neuritis, mean age 37±12.1years, 9 males and 21 female, 50% with neuropapillitis and 50% with retrobulbar neuritis. The diagnosis was supported by CEMRI. Patients with neuropapillitis & retrobulbar ON had a mean CS 1.67±0.15 & 1.47±0.20 respectively at 8 weeks of follow up which differed significantly (P=.003).
CONCLUSION: Contrast sensitivity recovery is better in cases of neuropapillitis than in retrobulbar ON.
