Abstract
The present study was conducted to find out the prevalence and Socio-demographic determinants of pterygium in a South Indian district of India.
METHODS:
It is a population based study. A total of 1000 subjects aged ≥40 years were screened. The demographic data of the patient was noted. All participants had a complete anterior segment examination to note for presence of any growth of fibrovascular tissue on the cornea and conjunctiva in the palpebral fissure. The laterality and type of pterygium was noted and graded.
Results:
The prevalence of pterygium was 8.5%. Out of 85 patients with pterygium 36.5% were male and 63.5% were female. Nasal pterygium was most common(95.2%), followed by double (3.5%) and temporal(1.17%). Grade 2 pterygium was the most common grade present (53%).
Conclusion:
Pterygium is a significant ocular condition which affects vision as well as cosmetic appearance. Hence precautions like protective glasses should be promoted for outdoor activity.
