Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the frequency of diabetic retinopathy (DR) with duration of diabetes mellitus. Methods: 800 patients of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) reporting to Medicine OPD from April 2019 to March 2020 were screened for DR. Patients where fundus was not visible due to opaque media, were excluded from study. Duration of DM was noted in all patients. Blood-sugar levels, urine-sugar & HbA₁C was done. Detailed ophthalmological examination & fundus examination was done. Results: DR was found in 28% patients of diabetes mellitus. Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) was detected in 74.11% & proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in 25.89% patients. Study reveals increase in incidence of DR with increase in duration of DM. DR incidence was found in 8.99% of patients having duration of DM less than 5 years & was found in 78.79% in patients when duration of DM was more than 20 years. Conclusion : There in an increase in incidence of DR with increase in duration of DM.
