Abstract
AIM: To study the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) and its association with diabetic retinopathy and HbA1c in diabetic patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study done for a period of 6 months included 100 patients with DM. Detailed history was taken and patients were assessed with the help of questionnaire. Complete ophthalmic evaluation and Tear film break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer’s test was done. HbA1c was tested in all patients.
RESULT: 60 Out of 100 patients suffered from DED and it was more common in female patients. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) was diagnosed in 54 patients. Patients with DR had higher HbA1c than patients without DR (p<0.001) and DED was more frequent in them (p=0.02). Longer duration of diabetes was significantly associated with DED (p=0.03). CONCLUSION: Prevalence of DED was higher in patients with longer duration of DM and with Diabetic Retinopathy. Periodic screening of diabetic patients should be done for early diagnosis and treatment of dry eye disease.
