Abstract
100 eyes with OSD underwent Schirmer’s test, Ocular Symptomology Score & MMP9 estimation . MMP-9 results with three groups of dry eye, improvement in OSS & Schirmer’s in Gp I(MMP-9+ve) & Gp II(MMP-9-ve) with lubricants and need for addition of steroids was evaluated .
40 eyes were MMP9+ve & had a mean Schirmer’s 12.85 + 7.07 as against MMP9-ve mean value 19.18 + 8.941. 80% were MMP9+ve in severe, 55.6% in moderate and only 22.5% with normal Schirmer’s were MMP9+ve. Definite Association was found between MMP9 +ve and Schirmer’s severity. No definite Association was found between MMP9 +ve and OSS.
All patients were started on lubricants. At 06 months, 85% MMP9+ve needed only lubricants & additional steroids was needed in 15%. In MMP9 -ve gp , at 06 months, 96.7% eyes needed only lubricants. In 3.3% addition of Steroids was needed.
Results show a trend to evaluate all cases of OSD with MMP-9 test and treat accordingly. Steroids should be started early in MMP-9 +ve eyes
