Abstract
Aim: To compare the tear film characteristics and severity of meibomian gland dysfunction among healthy women, those using Mascara and those who do not. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed during January 2018 to January 2019 among healthy women volunteers without any dry eye symptoms, to evaluate and compare the ocular surface symptoms scores (OSS) using a questionnaire and eye tests (grading of conjunctival inflammation, FTBUT, Schirmer 1, evaluation of meibomian gland function, Fluorescein staining scores) Results: TBUT was lower in Mascara group compared to controls (3.0± 1.9 vs. 5.8±2.1s, P<0.001). MG grading, Meiboscore, and Conjunctival inflammation were significantly higher in the Mascara group than in controls.OSS and Fluorescein staining scores and Schirmer scores were not significantly different among both groups. Conclusion: Regular use of Mascara causes tear film instability and Meibomian gland dysfunction.
