Abstract
In 35 patients with active central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and an equal number of age and sex matched healthy individuals as controls, systemic autonomic vascular tone was measured using arterial beat to beat pressure variability method by Finometer MIDI based on Penaz principle. Since CSC is a disease of choroidal “vasculature” a study measuring “vascular” autonomic function stands closer to the pathophysiology than cardiac autonomic function used by all other published studies. Cases and controls showed no significant difference in parasympathetic and sympathetic systemic vascular autonomic tone on time and frequency domain analysis. Systolic BP (p=0.0001), diastolic BP (p=0.0005) and mean BP (p =0.0003) was significantly higher in cases than controls. To conclude, the role of autonomic system imbalance in CSC might have been overestimated in the past and needs to be reevaluated.
