Abstract
We conducted a randomised study of 164 patients divided into 2 groups of 82 each, who underwent Modified Surgical Procedure using MitomycinC(MMC)(0.04%) and Amniotic Membrane Graft(AMG) for pterygium excision. Patients were followed up regularly till 6 months postoperative for recurrence and complications.
Results:The rate of recurrence in both the procedures was found to be similar(2.43%). The surgical time was significantly less(p<0.01) in MMC group.Minor complications like corneal thinning(1.21%) and granuloma(1.21%) in the MMC group and graft retraction(2.43%)and graft inflammation(1.21%) in the AMG group were observed. Conclusion:The study showed that both techniques had comparable minor treatable complications and equally reduced the recurrence rate. However, short surgical time, modified technique by sparing of the epithelial layer and meticulous use of intra operative MMC made the Modified surgical technique with MMC an effective treatment option for pterygium excision.
