Abstract
AIM: To study factors affecting visual prognosis in open globe injuries and correlation with Ocular Trauma Score (OTS)
METHODOLOGY: Retrospective observational study of open globe injury patients who underwent surgical repair. Detailed history, baseline demographic data, clinical characteristics of wound and tissues involved were noted. Using the OTS system, the prognosis of patients was calculated in terms of final visual acuity (VA) after 6 months.
RESULTS: Mean age was 32.32±2.4 years. 50% patients had traumatic cataract. Initial VA was ≥20/40,20/50<20/200,20/200‑CF,HM–PL & NLP in 0,2(8%),5(20%),17(68%)& 1(4%) eyes respectively. Final VA was ≤20/40,20/50<20/200,20/200‑1/200,HM–PL & NLP in 5(20%),7(28%),10(4%),2(8%) & 1 eyes respectively. CONCLUSION: Pre‑operative variables like mode of injury, pre‑operative VA, traumatic cataract, hyphema, RAPD, vitreous loss and vitreous hemorrhage adversely affect final visual outcome. Our study showed a good synchrony with international OTS.
