Abstract
In this case series,we retrospectively reviewed the VA outcome of 12 eyes in 10 patients with NAION ,10 of which were treated with IVTA and 2 were treated with tablet aspirin & topical brimonidine. 6 out of 7 eyes, who were treated with IVTA within 7days of onset of symptoms showed an improvement in VA.Rest 5 eyes, 3 of which had undergone delayed IVTA administration(>2 weeks) and 2eyes treated with tablet aspirin didn’t show any VA improvement. No IOP rise was noted in IVTA patients. In the IVTA group, there was an inverse correlation between the delay of injection & VA gain at 6 months.
Steroids decrease capillary permeability, suppress inflammation & thereby facilitate faster resolution of disc edema.High dose systemic steroids is fraught with serious systemic complications whereas IVTA directly affects the target tissue without inducing any systemic side effect.
In this study, patient receiving IVTA in acute phase have better VA gain at 6 months followup.A large RCT is however needed.
