Abstract
Methods: cross-sectional study of 50 patients having primary essential hypertension attending tertiary care centre from June 2019 to February 2020 was done. Detailed hypertensive status and ophthalmic evaluation and fasting serum lipid profile of all patients was done. Patients were divided into retinopathy and non-retinopathy groups initially. Staging of retinopathy was done using Modified Keith-Wagener-Barker classification.
Result: Of 50 hypertensive patients, 12 had normal fundus; rest showed signs of retinopathy. Males outnumbered females (70:30%). The study showed good correlation between lipid profile and severity of retinopathy in hypertensive patients.
Conclusion: Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for severe hypertensive retinopathy. Thus, serum lipid lowering agents can be useful in preserving vision in such hypertensive patients.
