Abstract
We present a case of an infant born at 28 weeks of gestation with birth weight 950 grams who developed aggressive posterior ROP (APROP) at 33 weeks of postmenstrual age and injection bevacizumab (IVB) was administered for the same. APROP regressed in both eyes 1-week post-injection. Increased tortuosity of vessels was noted in both eyes with vessels reaching zone II anterior 14 weeks post IVB and laser photocoagulation was planned for reactivation of ROP. On systemic evaluation, the infant had haemoglobin level of 5 gm/dl. The infant was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia. As the haemoglobin level improved to 11gm/dl, retinal vascular tortuosity decreased, and laser photocoagulation was deferred. Numerous risk factors have been identified in ROP development but role of anemia has not been addressed adequately in the literature. This poster emphasizes that systemic factors leading to ischemia can cause development and progression of ROP and requires further investigation.
