Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Recurrent corneal infection by herpes simplex virus is a common cause of blindness in otherwise healthy individuals.
MATERIALS &METHODS: hospital based prospective study of 100 eyes involving 85 patients of viral involvement of cornea, All patients underwent slit lamp biomicroscopy, fluorescein staining. All diagnosis made clinically and all given specific treatment. RESULTS: Majority (66.5%) of the patients belonged to 20 to 40 years followed by 21.7% of patients in 40 to 50 years. Males more commonly affected than females. Bilateral herpetic keratitis found in 17.64% patients. In this study most common lesion was epithelial keratitis (56.5%) followed by stromal keratits (25.5%). Among patients of epithelial keratitis, superficial punctate keratitis was most common.CONCLUSION: Diagnosis is based on clinical presentation. HSV keratitis is a major cause of unilateral blindness.
