Abstract
PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of GABA analog pregabalin in management of ocular neuropathic pain.
METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 15 patients having symptoms of chronic ocular pain. Proparacaine 0.5% test was done to identify pain of central origin. Ocular examination included ocular surface analysis, schirmer’s test, tear break up time. Patients were started on Capsule pregabalin 75 mg with increase in dose upto 300 mg weekly for 1 month. Ocular pain assessment survey was done to quantify severity of pain at start and end of therapy.
RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 47.92 ± 13.93 years with mean duration of pain 9.07 ± 3.69 months. The mean pain scale score was 7.86 ± 1.64 pre-treatment and 4.07 ± 2.98 after one month (p<0.001). None of the patients had any serious side effects during this study. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that Pregabalin is safe and effective in managing chronic ocular neuropathic pain in patients unresponsive to other treatment strategies.
