Abstract
PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of smoking on subjective and objective measures of ocular surface health.
METHODS: 51 smokers (active smoking&>100 cigarettes in lifetime)&53 non-smokers,20-45years,filled up ocular surface disease index questionnaire (OSDI) & underwent various objective tests for tear film function. Smoking index was calculated.
RESULTS: The mean OSDI score was lower(insignificant) and Schirmer‘s I significantly higher than non-smoker.BST(8.76±2.86) &TBUT(8.65±14.79)were significantly lower and corneal fluorescein staining(1.10±0.55) higher than non-smokers(11.89±7.36,14.79±5.55,0.55±0.69 respectively). While Tear meniscus, functionalVA, tear ferning & conjunctival impression cytology were similar.Smoking index directly correlated with OSDI
CONCLUSION:Smoking has adverse effect on tear film stability. While severity of symptoms increase with severity of smoking.
