Abstract
Aim:To determine the spectrum of neuro-ophthalmic manifestations in HIV patients and its correlation with CD4+Tcell count. Study Design:Cross-sectional,non-interventional,hospital-based case series. Methods: 300 HIV patients were examined for neuro-ophthalmic findings and its correlation with CD4+T cell count. Results:25 patients were found with some kind of neuro-ophthalmic findings. 8 were symptomatic and 17 were asymptomatic. Optic nerve related lesions like neuritis and papilloedema were common. Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy in was present in 2, retrobulbar optic neuritis and optic atrophy in 1 patient each. 3rd and 5th nerve palsies were seen in 1 patient each. A strong correlation was found between low CD4+T cell counts and neuro-ophthalmic manifestations. Conclusion:The wide spectrum of neuro-ophthalmic manifestations correlate with CD4+ Tcell count which are a predictor of neuro-ophthalmic involvement.
