Abstract
Aim- To asses the etiological and epidemiological factors of corneal opacity in children (0-12 years) at tertiary care centre
Method-A hospital based observational study was conducted in department of Ophthalmology from august 2019-may 2020.They were evaluated for age at presentation ,sex, cause of corneal opacity, visual acuity, ocular symptoms and examination, and demographic profile. The data was then analysed and observed.
Result-Total 46 cases were observed.Most common cause was found to be trauma (52.1%), post infectious(26.08%), chemical injury(8.69%), keratomalacia(4.34%), corneal degeneration(4.34%) and dystrophy( 2.17%), and congenital(2.17%).Most common age of presentation is 5-7 years,with 70% male, and 64% children were from rural area.
Conclusion -A comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach at reducing ocular trauma and infection can reduce the burden of corneal blindness.
