Abstract
Purpose: To study the profile of penetrating eye injuries before and during the period of lockdown due to COVID–19 in India.Methods: A survey was done to make a comparative analysis of the penetrating eye injuries over a period of lockdown for 71days and a mean of 71days before it.Results:The study included 16 cases before and 21 cases during lockdown. Injuries in 0-15 years of age group before lockdown were 37.5% while 61% during lockdown. Mode of injuries before lockdown were indoor injuries (37.5%),road accidents(31.25%) while during lockdown the major mode was indoor injuries(71.4%)while road accidents (9.5%) dropped markedly.Conclusion: During lockdown indoor injuries were common.During lockdown, increase in the unmonitored indoor activities of children led to a rise in the injuries almost twice as before.In addition,immobilization led to a decrease in the injuries due to road accidents.Hence, COVID-19 lockdown had an impact on the profile of penetrating ocular injuries.
