Abstract
Stereopsis is the function of binocular visual acuity which defines the quality of visual acuity. All forms of ametropia affect stereopsis. Considering the epidemiology of myopia & effect of stereopsis on quality of vision, it is important to study the correlation between both. The study was carried out with 200 subjects of whom 148 had mild, 40 had moderate & 12 had severe myopia. Stereoacuity was carried out for both distance & near. While stereoacuity was normal in mild cases of myopia (43.24±28.38 for distance & 93.24±50.49 for near) moderate & severe myopia showed highly significant (p<0.01) fall in stereoacuity (150±15.94 for distance & 600±200.9 for near) even with full refractive correction. The fall in stereoacuity was more in anisometropic(>1D) conditions. It is concluded that severe myopia, even with full refractive correction can decrease the quality of vision by affecting binocular function. It is recommended that analysis of stereoacuity should be as routine practice.
