Abstract
Aim: To study the burden of concomitant strabismus in 5 to 10 year old children.
Material and methods: This screening was conducted using the Welch Allyn spot vision screener and Hirschberg test.
Result: Of the 6033 students screened, 1.1% had concomitant strabismus (M=55%,F=45%). 54% had esotropia, 34.84% had exotropia & 10.6% had vertical deviations. 91.66% of esotropes & 94% of exotropes were <30°.75.75% had refractive error (myopia 42%, hyperopia 58%). Conclusion: Uncorrected strabismus can result in strabismic amblyopia. The risk of developing amblyopia grows with age. It has an extensive socioeconomic impact, poor scholastic performance leading to limited employment opportunities which mirrors as poor quality of life. This study stresses on the need for public education about the burden of strabismus. Early diagnosis & proper management can prevent blindness attributable to strabismus.
