Abstract
Von Noorden exemplified how two siblings, an 8-year old esotropic girl and her 6-year old orthophoric brother both having same magnitude of hypermetropia reacted differently in their childhood, due to difference in their personality trait, when confronted to choose between esotropia and clear vision versus orthophoria and blurred vision. This leads to postulation of a hypothesis, concomitant squint is correlated with personality trait of a child. One hundred children between 11- 14 years with atleast+ /-2.00 D spherical equivalent refractive error were evaluated for their Personality on Neuroticism (N) and Extraversion (E) scales by a Bengali edition of revised junior Eysenck personality questionnaire. Their strabismus status was determined by PBCT (Prism Bar Cover Test). Analysis of results showed stable personality trait in children is positively correlated with development of concomitant refractive squint. Thus concomitant refractive squint is a psycho-somatic disorder.
