Abstract

Aim – To compare mean central corneal thickness (CCT) in type 2 Diabetes mellitus (DM) and non-diabetics

Materials- Case control study involving 62 patients (62 eyes) with type 2 DM and 48 controls (48 eyes). CCT was recorded in all eyes using non-contact optical pachymeter (Topcon CT-1P). Mean age of cases and controls was 51±11 years. Following parameters were studied- Duration of DM and severity of retinopathy

Results- In diabetic group mean CCT varied significantly from non-diabetic controls (p<0.05).CCT was significantly thicker for diabetics with duration >7 years than with <7 years (p<0.05). CCT was thicker in diabetics having retinopathy changes than with no changes but was insignificant (p>0.01)

Conclusion- Type 2 DM subjects had significantly thicker CCT which was related to the duration of diabetes and not to the severity of retinopathy. Thus to conclude Intraocular pressure is overestimated in diabetic subjects having thicker corneas and underestimated in thinner corneas
