Abstract
AIM- To find the prevalence of dry eye disease in adolescents and its association with meibomian gland dysfunction using history and clinical examinations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS- It was a cross sectional study. Total 140 adolescents were studied. Symptoms were evaluated. Slit lamp examination was performed and tear film break up time was calculated for all subjects.
RESULTS- Out of the 140 participants with 82 males and 58 females, 48 were found to have dry eye disease, in these 27 were males and 21 were females. Meibomian gland disease was present in 31 out of 48 patients. Corneal fluorescein scores were significantly higher and tear film break up time was shorter in the dry eye patients. There was significant abnormality of the meibomian orifices and meibomian secretions.
CONCLUSION- Dry eye disease was present in 34.28% of the adolescents. Meibomian gland disease was found in 64.58% of the dry eye patients suggesting that it plays an important role in dry eye.
