Abstract
Aim: We present the difference in clinical profile of thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) patients based on systemic thyroid status. Methods: Clinical profile and treatment details of all TAO patients presenting between July 2014 to November 2015 were analyzed. Results: One twenty-nine patients with a mean age of 40.7±14.05 years (range 9-83) were included in this study. Systemic status was hyperthyroidism in 75%, euthyroidism in 4% and hypothyroidism in 22%. Comparing hyperthyroid vs hypothyroid vs euthyroid, lid retraction (56% vs 32% vs 80% p=0.03) and proptosis (68% vs 36% vs 100% p=0.002) were more common in hyper and euthyroid patients. Lagophthalmos (39% vs 11% vs 20%) and active disease (90% vs 0% vs 10%) was commoner in Hyperthyroidism. They had more severe active disease (2 of 3 patients) in this study. Conclusion: There is a greater incidence of severe active TAO in hyperthyroid patients as compared with hypo or euthyroid patients.
